Rowing New South Wales is delighted to welcome Stephen Handley OAM as a Life Member, recognising his exceptional contribution to rowing in NSW across six decades.
Stephen's Life Membership was confirmed at the 148th Annual General Meeting of Rowing NSW, held on Monday 19 October 2026.
The occasion was made particularly special by the attendance of fellow Rowing NSW Life Members Andrew Rowley, Terry O'Hanlon, Keith Jameson OAM and Tony Brown, pictured above with Steve (centre), who joined in welcoming Stephen to this distinguished group.
Life Membership is one of the highest honours bestowed by Rowing NSW, recognising individuals whose dedication, leadership and service have made a lasting contribution to the sport.
Stephen's involvement in rowing spans an outstanding career as an international athlete, volunteer coach and sporting administrator.
As an athlete, Stephen represented Australia at the 1977 and 1978 World Rowing Championships and competed in the Men's Eight at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. He was also a member of the victorious NSW King's Cup crews in 1977 and 1978.
Following his competitive career, Stephen devoted approximately 40 years to honorary coaching, contributing to the development of generations of rowers at Newington College, The King's School, St Joseph's College and Sydney Rowing Club. His longstanding service to Sydney Rowing Club was recognised with Life Membership in 2005.
Stephen's contribution to the governance and development of rowing in NSW has been equally significant. He joined the Rowing NSW Board in 2005 and served for more than 20 years, including as Deputy President from 2017 until his retirement from the Board in May 2026.
During his tenure, Stephen held several important leadership roles, including Chair of Selectors from 2006 to 2014 and Chair of the Rowing NSW Competition Commission from 2014. Through these positions, he helped shape state teamselection processes, competition structures and athlete pathways, contributing to the ongoing development of the sport.
Stephen has also represented Rowing NSW at the national level as an appointed Councillor to Rowing Australia and currently as the Chair of the Rowing in Australia Advisory Group. His commitment to rowing governance continues through his appointment to the Rowing Australia Board in 2026.
Rowing NSW President Sinclair Taylor acknowledged Stephen's extraordinary service.
“Steve’s contribution to rowing in NSW has been exceptional, both in its breadth and longevity. From his achievements as an Olympian and his decades of voluntary coaching to his leadership on the Rowing NSW Board, he has made an enduring contribution to our sport.
“Steve has always brought an extraordinary depth of knowledge and a genuine commitment to the future of rowing. He has been willing to challenge the way we do things, but equally willing to listen to others and change his view when the argument warranted it.
“It was particularly fitting to have fellow Life Members join us at the AGM to welcome Steve and recognise everything he has contributed over so many years.”
Rowing NSW warmly congratulates Stephen Handley OAM on his Life Membership and thanks him for his outstanding service, leadership and commitment to rowing in New South Wales.
