New Zealand retain Youth Cup for third consecutive year

Jul 2, 2012

New Zealand have recorded a resounding victory in the Australian Youth Cup, taking out both the Men’s and Women’s Eight A Finals to return the Rusty Robertson Trophy to Kiwi Shores.

The trophy, awarded to the overall winners in the pointscore, was partly in the grasp of the New Zealanders after day two of the regatta, but was firmly locked away into the visiting team’s luggage with resounding wins in the Eights on Sunday.

The New Zealand men won their A Final in a time of 6:04.91mins, holding onto a narrow one-second lead though both the 1000m and 2000m metre mark to hold out eventual silver medallists South Australia. NSW took the bronze medal in a time of 6:11.58mins.

In the Women’s Eight A Final, the final event of the regatta, the New Zealanders were once again triumphant, finishing 3.64 seconds ahead of Victoria in second, with Queensland in third and NSW in a tight finish for fourth.

Also on show on Sunday was the Women’s Coxless Four, and New Zealand continued their winning ways, taking gold with a commanding 6.87 second lead ahead of silver medallists NSW and bronze medallists Victoria.

Congratulations to all athletes and coaches who completed a program of incredible performances throughout the regatta, helped by fine weather and racing conditions which held out through all three days of the Youth Cup.
