The Australian Boat Race - Results

The honours were shared as arch-rivals -Sydney and Melbourne University rowing crews raced across Sydney's inner harbour in the Australian Boat Race today - Sunday 31st October.

Tracing a course from Leichhardt north down Iron Cove and along the Balmain peninsula the crews then turned 20-25% north west at Cockatoo Island across open water and raced into the Lane Cove River at Greenwich. The finish was 7.3 kms away at Riverview Wharf.

In the Women's Eights Melbourne won convincingly. In the Men's eights Sydney Uni were beaten of the start by the fast moving Melbourne crew but gradually worked their way onto level terms then a slight lead as the crews rounded Cockatoo Island.

The Sydney team broke away as they reached the Lane Cove River and proved too strong in the run west to Riverview.

The winning times were: Men's Eights 22.03 and Women's Eights 24.58.

The Australian Boat Race

On Sunday 31 October Sydney University will battle Melbourne University in the first Australian Boat Race.

The event, which will feature a women’s and men’s eight race, will go for 7.3km, starting at Leichardt Rowing Club and finishing at Riverview Wharf.

Sydney University crew member, Mitch Estens says that fans are encouraged to come and support the race.

“Sydney University Boat Club would like to invite spectators to jump in their mega yachts or pack your school tinnies with your athletes, friends and family and come and follow the race from the best seat in the house,” Estens said.

“We are a harbour city and we think the best viewing will be from a speed boat 100m away from the crews. The more the merrier.

“It would be great to have a following alongside us similar to the homecoming of Jessica Watson. I think both races should be a great spectacle.”
