Watson speeds to national title

Friday 6 March 2009

New South Wales rower Bronwen Watson has won the women’s lightweight single scull title at the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, Tasmania.

Watson, who was part of the world championship winning women’s lightweight quad scull crew in 2008, capitalised on a good start and won in a time of 7:44.21.

Watson finished in front of fellow world champion Alice McNamara (VIC), while 2008 Under 23 world champion in the women’s lightweight single scull, Carly Cottam (TAS) won the bronze medal.

One of the favourites, Ingrid Fenger, had to withdraw before the race began due to a shoulder injury.

Todd Skipworth added another Australian title to his collection with a solid victory in the final of the men’s lightweight single scull.

The West Australian, who represented Australia in Beijing in the men’s lightweight four, led out of the blocks to win in a time of 7:19.29 ahead of Toowong rower Robert Hoyes (QLD) and New South Wales rower Hugh McLeod.

The finals in the bigger boats will be held on Saturday morning, with feature races including the men’s four and women’s quad scull.

The lane draw for the Interstate Regatta will also be conducted on Saturday.
