Tasmanian crews have narrowly missed out double success at the Interstate Regatta by claiming in front of a raucous local crowd at Lake Barrington, Tasmania.
The women’s lightweight quad scull crew of Emily Grant, Ella Flecker, Carly Cottam and Ingrid Fenger started off proceedings well for Tasmania after winning in a time of 6:36.77.
They led for the entire race to cross the line ahead of Victoria and Queensland.
Cottom said the support had been amazing.
“The whole week here has been amazing and the support of the crowd has been unbelievable,” Cottam said. “The feeling that we had when we crossed the line has made all the hard work worth it.”
Western Australia then won the Penrith Cup for the men’s lightweight four for the third consecutive year, disappointing the local crowd who had been looking for a Tasmanian double in the lightweight classes.
In what has developed into a two state race in the last decade, Tasmania held the lead after the first half of the race but were overcome by the West Australian crew of Todd Skipworth, Tom Nicholls, Ross Brown and Perry Ward who won in a time of 6:12.81. Queensland finished in second place, while Tasmania had to settle for the bronze medal.
The Interstate Regatta features eight races that combine to decide the champion state and winner of the Rowing Australia Cup.
