Olympic silver medallists back in business

Wednesday 4 March 2009

Three of Australia’s Olympic silver medallists showed their strength on Day 3 of the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, Tasmania.

Matt Ryan (NSW), Cameron McKenzie-McHarg (VIC) and James Marburg (VIC) were joined by young Alexander Scharp (VIC) to comfortably win their heat of the men’s four and qualify directly for the final.

Ryan, McKenzie-McHarg and Marburg were part of the men’s four crew in Beijing that won the silver medal behind Great Britain. Francis Hegerty was the fourth member of the crew but is currently recovering from injury and the four have stated their intention to remain together in the next international season and push for more honours.

Ryan, McKenzie-McHarg, Marburg and Scharp won their heat today in a time of 6:23.83 by a comfortable 11 seconds. The all AIS crew of Tom Larkins (VIC), Dominic Grimm (NSW), Fergus Pragnell (NSW) and Tom Swann (VIC) won the second semi-final in a quicker time of 6:14.87 and will challenge for the title in the final.

Bronwen Watson (NSW) continued her charge to a potential first national title in the women’s lightweight single scull after winning her semi-final.

Watson, who was part of the women’s lightweight quad scull that won gold at last year’s World Championships, has shown consistent form during both the heat and semi-final and completed the race this morning in a time of 8:09.21.

Watson led home Tasmanian and fellow world championship crew mate, Ingrid Fenger, while South Australian Maja Fiddler snatched the last place in the final.

Alice McNamara (VIC) was only 0.14 seconds slower than Watson in winning the second semi-final. The Melbourne Uni rower finished two boat lengths clear of club mate Yasmin Burraston, while Tamar Rowing Club’s Carly Cottam secured third place.

The final promises to be a close run affair as Australia’s top female lightweight rowers battle to fill the void left by Amber Halliday and Marguerite Houston who have taken a break from the sport for at least the remainder of this year.

Ten under age finals will be contested on Day 4, along with the semi-finals of the men’s double scull.
