Olympic silver medallists Cameron McKenzie-McHarg and James Marburg have won the final of the men’s pair at the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, Tasmania.
The Victorian pair claimed their second pair’s championship, having previously won the title the last time it was staged in Tasmania in 2006.
McKenzie-McHarg and Marburg, who were part of the men’s four crew that won silver in Beijing, recovered from a slow start to storm past their opposition over the closing 300 metres and win in a time of 6:28.04. They finished two and a half seconds clear of Dominic Grimm (NSW) and Tom Larkins (VIC), while Fergus Pragnell (NSW) and Tom Swann (VIC) won the bronze medal.
Marburg said that winning the national title for the second time was a good feeling.
“We are really focused on doing a full Olympic cycle this time around and this is the first step in that process,” Marburg said. “We’ve been working very hard on our fitness and I think that showed in our performance today.
“The young guys who are coming through the system have been really impressive and it feels good to get one over them today. They are only going to keep improving.”
In the final of the women’s pair, Pauline Frasca (VIC) and Phoebe Stanley (VIC) rowed a good back end of the race to prevail in a time of 7:28.05, finishing ahead of Laura Osti (SA) and Emma McCarthy (QLD), with Sylvie Withers (VIC) and Sophie Robson in third (VIC).
