Crawshay crowned National Champion

Friday 6 March 2009

David Crawshay has underlined his status as Australia’s top sculler by winning the men’s single scull at the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Australian Rowing Championships at Lake Barrington, Tasmania.

Crawshay, who was part of the men’s double scull crew at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games that won gold, executed a perfectly timed race to surge through the field in the closing 500 metres to win in a time of 7:22.34.

Racing into a slight head wind under sunny skies, Crawshay lay in third place at the 1500 metre mark before overcoming the challenge laid down by West Australian Jeremy Stevenson to win by a boat length. Italian Niccolo Mornatti held off defending champion in the event, Daniel Noonan (NSW) to claim the bronze medal.

Crawshay, who is yet to decide if he will compete internationally this year, said it felt good to be racing again.

“I haven’t fully committed myself to rowing in 2009 but physically I feel really strong,” Crawshay said. “To have such a high class field competing for the men’s single title is a credit to the depth of scullers in the country and I am really happy to come away with the win.”

Nick Hudson (NSW) and Brendan Long (TAS) won the final of the men’s double scull in a time of 6:39.32.

Hudson and Long broke to a four second lead after the first 500 metres and never looked back as they won by a boat length over the Mosman pair of Dan Noonan and Sean Casey, while Mornatti and Crawshay secured the bronze medal.
