Lake Barrington readies itself for championships
Friday 27 February 2009
The final preparations are being made for the 2009 Hydro Tasmania Australian Rowing Championships and Interstate Regatta that commence at Lake Barrington on Monday 2 March.
Over 1500 of the nation’s top rowers will converge on Tasmania’s premier rowing course to compete in the Australian Championships over seven days. Lake Barrington, situated just outside the north-west Tasmanian town of Devonport, will host the regatta for the first time since 2006.
The regatta offers racing for not only Australia’s elite rowers, but also for many of the country’s most talented rowing schools. The 2009 Australian Rowing Championships will also serve as the first round of selection trials for the Australian Senior, U23 and Junior Teams and there promises to be a multitude of tight racing across the week long event.
Rowing Australia High Performance Director, Andrew Matheson, says there should be some close competition for places on all three of Australia’s touring teams in 2009.
“We have had a large proportion of our Olympic athletes either retire or take an extended break from competition in 2009 and it has opened the door for some of Australia’s younger athletes,” Matheson said.
“A large proportion of the U23 team from last year are almost ready to make the step up to senior level and it will be good to see how they respond to the pressure this week.”
Racing will commence on Monday 2 March at 8am and concludes with the Interstate Regatta on Sunday 8 March.
