NSW Para Rowers Prevail at SIRR 2017 - By Liam James

Apr 10, 2017

New South Wales fielded the largest squad of  Para Rowers again this year and once again they delivered the Bob Blake Shield and we applaud them for bringing it home.

While the numbers were low in the Arms and Shoulders [AS] category, the Legs, Trunk and Arms [LTA] category was so well represented that there was a need for two heats and for the first time in Australian Rowing history 5 crews took the line in the LTA 4+ Championship race.

In the Interstate Regatta, NSW achieved an almost perfect result of one Gold and one Silver across the two para events, the LTA Women's single and Men's single respectively.

In the other events in the regatta program, NSW brought home silver in the TA Women's Scull, with Balmain Rower Caitlin Lisle rowing  above her category in competition with the winner, Paralympic TA rower Kathryn Ross from the ACT.

In the Men's AS and TA events, Sydney Rowing Club's Erik Horrie put in a very strong performance, winning the AS single and coming second to new rower Curtis McGrath from Surfer's Paradise in the TA scull.

In the LTA Men's division, NSW had 6 scullers in contention, with Balmain's Kevin Wall and James Talbot in fourth and second place in a hard fought final.  The women's final was put beyond doubt in a dominant performance by Nepean's Kate Murdoch who shook off the effects of a recent injury to win by more than 5 seconds over Mersey's Emma Jago.

Murdoch and Wall combined well in the Mixed Double Scull for a convincing win, but in the mixed LTA 4+ NSW was represented in all but the winning composite crew.

Overall however it was a dominant performance by NSW para rowers, and brilliant to see the development and increase in the competitiveness of the division across the country.
